Courtney Manning is an official CAPA blogger for spring 2017, sharing her story in weekly posts on CAPA World. A Convergence Journalism major at the University of Missouri-Columbia, she is studying abroad in London this semester.
In this week's post, Courtney takes us through a typical day in her life as a CAPA London student.
Every day here varies greatly and none is quite like the others. That’s what I love about London; there is an incredible amount of completely different things to do here, and you can never really be bored!
My day always starts with coffee. I’ve become a regular at this chain called Pret a Manger (Pret for short), which is on basically every single street corner. It’s delicious, fast and cheap. On the days when I have my internship, I take the tube to Westminster, which is about 20 minutes away from our flats. If I don’t have my internship, then I usually go for a morning run around Primrose Hill (a.k.a. the prettiest place ever) or shopping in the Camden Market. I’ve been trying to explore different nooks and crannies around Camden and Primrose Hill every morning when I don’t have my internship. I want to get to know my neighborhood inside and out. I love the complete difference between Camden Town, which is very punk and edgy, and Primrose Hill, which is very colorful and posh, even though they are right next to each other. I have been bringing my camera everywhere I go because there is so much street art and beautiful architecture all around this city.
On the days when I don’t have my internship, my friends and I really like to explore different markets and restaurants in the city before class. Our classes are really wonderful because they are usually field trips around the city that show us places we normally wouldn’t visit or even know about.
My life here is extremely different from my life at Mizzou and I absolutely love it. I love Mizzou with all my heart, but I have a lot more free time to explore and go on adventures here. We have classes twice a week, which are either a field trip or held in the classrooms at the CAPA center. I enjoy our classes a lot because they are basically the only times when our whole group is together, so they are kind of bonding experiences as well.
After class, my friends and I will usually go out to eat somewhere new in Kensington near the CAPA office. Sometimes we all have movie nights where we order pizzas and we’ve had a few big pancake brunches as well. Everyone on my trip gets along really well, which is very nice.
On the days when I do have my internship, I usually work from 9:30am to 5:30pm, so by the time I get back home I’m pretty tired and ready to chill out with my friends. Sometimes I’ll stop by our local supermarket, Sainsbury’s, which is right across the street from our flat building. There is also another supermarket called Morrison’s which is cheaper and, in my opinion, a bit nicer, but I only go there if I’m willing to make the walk, which is about 10 minutes, as opposed to walking right across the street. I’ll cook dinner in my apartment, and then I usually just hang out with my friends either at my place or theirs.
Life in London is truly wonderful, and there are just as many things to do as there are opportunities to sit back and relax. It’s a beautiful, lively city, and I’m doing everything I can to make the most of my time here.
Courtney's journey continues every Wednesday so stay tuned.
