Picture this: you’ve just come back from you’re trip abroad and you have so many great stories to tell. You visited some incredible sites, ate delicious food, and made friends from all around the world. But no matter how hard you try, with time, holding on to these memories will become more and more difficult. Because we'd never want you to forget a second of your time abroad, here's a list of things you can do to preserve and cherish your memories!
1. Buy similar mementos from each city you visit
When you’re traveling, one of the best places to buy small trinkets is from vendors on the street. These gifts will be cheaper and perhaps more relevant to the city than items you’d find in larger shops. In each place you visit, it might be a good idea to buy a fridge magnet, a snow-globe, or something similar in order to remember each place you've been. After a few cities, your collection will start to grow and you’ll have memories from all over the world.
2. One unique gift
Even though collectors items are a cool idea, they aren’t for everybody. Perhaps instead of getting the same item from each place, it may be your style to get something totally different from each city. It’s likely that wherever you travel there is something that makes that place special; buy a boomerang in Australia, or coffee beans in central America. Whatever it is, it will be a great reminder of an amazing trip.
If you’re traveling overseas often, then something really cool that you can collect is money. When you leave, make sure you have a note of the local currency. After a few colorful bills your collection will start to come together. Over the years, if you’re lucky enough to travel extensively, your collection can be made into a homemade poster. Not only will it look very cool and diverse, but it will be worth something as well!
Something else you can collect from places you travel to are shirts, sports jerseys, or any other type of clothing. This is very easy to do and is more affordable than other alternatives. There are a wide variety of clothes that you can buy in each city to diversify your collection. Having a shirt from each city will not only look cool, but they each will tell a unique story.

5. Scratch Map
Scratch maps are a fantastic way to remember where you have traveled to around the world. Amazon sells a wide variety of maps ranging from $15- $50. Each has unique features, but the general idea is that you scratch away the top layer of a country where you have been, revealing a colorful background underneath. Although it's a very simple concept, scratch maps are a wonderful way to visualize not only where you've been, but where you've yet to go.
6. Cook Book
Whether you’re studying abroad or taking a trip with your family, you’ll be eating food very different than what you’re used to. Buying a local cook book is a great way to remind you of the marvelous types of food you ate on your trip. Try to find the most authentic book as possible, as these recipes will often be the most local and unique. If you are living in a home-stay, ask the person who cooks the most to write down their favorite recipes. When you get home you can still enjoy the tastes you experienced while traveling abroad.

7. Music Playlists
Everyone doesn’t have all the money in the world, and there are many free ways to remember a wonderful trip abroad. One of the best ways to do that is to create a music playlist of songs that you either listened to abroad. Whether it's local music or songs you simply happened to be listening to during your travels, the feeling you get when you listen to the playlist will bring back some great feelings.
Another way to remind you of a trip abroad would be to take a rock from wherever you visit. Of course you must be reasonable and not steal, but if you are on a beach and see a beautiful and small rock, you have a new souvenir! Each time you see this rock, you’ll be reminded of where you got it from.

9. Scrapbook/Photo Album
Another cheap and great way to document your travels is to create a scrap book or photo album. You can this online or by hand, as each requires different techniques and offers different customization. Include tickets, receipts, photos and whatever else you have from your trip. For years to come, you'll look back at this and be reminded of how wonderful your trip was.
10. Make a Video
During your trip, take videos of all your favorite moments and stitch them together. Although simple and affordable, a short movie will be a fantastic was to relive your travels over and over again. You’ll be in the comfort of your own home and still experiencing the sights and sounds of your trip abroad. This will be a great reminder of the best parts of your overseas experience.
