---
For my CAPA internship, I am interning as a marketing and communications intern for Unbridled Pty LTD. Unbridled is the brainchild of Louise Taylor, who is a motivational speaker and sales consultant. It is a small company—the first time that I have ever been part of one—where the only other employee is Louise herself. I work from her home office in Illawong, which is about an hour away by public transport. While I am the only other person besides Louise, I do have the company of Louise’s golden retriever, who, while lacking in technical skills is definitely a team player and a joy to have around. Working in a smaller setup is something I am not used to, but I’m excited to see what I can learn from interning at a startup.
In terms of the actual internship duties, I will be helping to create a wide range of marketing materials—from editing together podcasts to customer relationship management. Basically, anything that falls under the broad scope of the marketing field will more than likely come into my hands during this internship. As someone who only really has internship experience on the technical side of marketing, this is an exciting way for me to gain knowledge of aspects of marketing that I have yet to encounter both in school and from my other internship experiences.
One of the things that I’m contributing to the company is automating the tasks system on Louise's website, as well as setting up the basic structure for search engine optimization. I’m not expert in SEO (which is a process that helps to rank a website higher on Google’s search engine results page), but I do have enough of an understanding that I’m able to help set up the foundation of SEO on her website through title tags and meta descriptions. It’s definitely a bit of a passion project for me and one that is usually running in the background of all our other activities. It is a project that I can proudly say is composed by me and a project that will have lasting positive impressions for Unbridled.
I think this internship will give me an opportunity to understand what it’s like to intern in a smaller work environment, as well as a greater insight into my own work process. I think that while I enjoy working in a team, it’s easy to get lost in the process of your efforts, especially when it’s part of a larger group. At this internship, I’ll be able to understand just how I work and also figure out what specific kind of work I enjoy. To be completely honest, despite the opportunity to gain more independence and drive in a position, it’s a little daunting to have all of the work produced be entirely derived of how well I am doing. Obviously, this work will still be checked over, but its quality is a direct result of my own skill. For most tasks, I’m the only one focusing on the assignment rather than with a team. While I’m used to working in a group setting, the opportunity for independence is sure to be an interesting experience.
I think this internship will provide my with the flexibility of working in different environments while also exposing me to a wide range of different marketing activities. I’m excited for what comes ahead and to see what I can learn during the next several weeks this semester from my internship at Unbridled.
Thanks, Martyn!
