Jolena is an official CAPA vlogger for spring 2018, sharing her story in weekly posts on CAPA World. A Finance and International Business major at University of Pittsburgh, she is studying abroad in Shanghai this semester.
In this week's post, Jolena talks about taking a sleeper train to Hangzhou, visiting West Lake, and getting a chance to experience Shanghai Fashion Week.
In this blog post I’ll be describing our CAPA excursion to Hangzhou and attending a Fashion Weekend event in Shanghai!
Two weeks ago, our CAPA group set out on an adventure to Hangzhou. We took the sleeper train which was a really cool experience. The sleeper train is basically broken into sections with six bunks within them. It was something I’d never experienced before, and as cramped as it may sound, a lot of us agreed that we really enjoyed our naps on the train. While you’re on the train there are also snacks, such as fruit and different beverages, being wheeled on carts and sold for a small price. Before long we arrived at the Hangzhou Railway Station and our hotel was conveniently located right next to the station! It was an unfortunate first day due to rain, but we managed to walk to the West Lake and have a brief walk through before we all decided to return to the hotel and stay indoors.
Day two of Hangzhou had more pleasant weather and we returned back to the West Lake to take the ferry to the gardens. We spent a good chunk of time walking around the gardens before traveling to the Buddhist temples. Although our time was limited we broke into groups to explore and my group managed to make it all the way through the temple grounds.
The structures and statues were really beautiful and historic. But because we had such short time we had to run back to the front gate which was pretty crazy. Altogether, I can’t complain because we spent such a beautiful day getting to wander around Hangzhou!
The weekend we arrived home from Hangzhou my roommate Luisa had heard of a Fashion Weekend event occurring down at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. Shanghai fashion week was coming to a close and we really wanted to attend an event so this was the perfect opportunity!
The exhibition center is only a handful of stops away so getting there was pretty easy. Upon getting in there were many cool displays from fashion week sponsors, along with a display of Chinese fashion throughout the years. There were also food booths, booths from more sponsors, and even stalls where real designers were selling clothes. The best part was probably being able to see a runway show. They were running shows every few hours and we arrived right on time for one!
Altogether I had a really great few days at Hangzhou and attending Shanghai Fashion Week! It’s crazy how many places there are to explore in China, and I would definitely return to Hangzhou again to explore some more! As for the fashion weekend event, the opportunity was such an experience and I don’t know if I could’ve had the same opportunity back in the U.S. Thinking back now, I wish I could relive it all because since then I’ve been kept busy with school and my internship starting. Having not had an internship before things are pretty interesting, but I’ll leave telling you about that until the next blog!
Jolena's journey continues every Tuesday so stay tuned.
