I chose CAPA International Education as my study abroad provider specifically for the academic and internship program. I wanted to study abroad in a place that an internship experience was available to me. The programs that were available through the University of Minnesota were Sydney, London, and Spain. I wanted to go somewhere where I would understand the language and somewhere where my best friend wasn’t studying so that ruled out Spain and London. I wanted to branch out, meet new people, and go out of my comfort zone, so Sydney seemed like the ideal option. I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am that I chose my specific program. The opportunities that I am receiving during my time abroad are truly once in a lifetime..
This semester I am interning with a company called DriveMyCarRentals. It is an interesting company to me, and probably to people back home, because it is an online peer-to-peer car renting company. Peer-to-peer companies are based off of the idea of collaborative consumption. Collaborative consumption is a growing industry in Australia, the UK, and the US. It’s based off of the principle of buying less and sharing more. Car owners that are traveling for an extended period of time or have an extra car that they are not using are able to list their car on DriveMyCarRentals. Potential customers are able to rent cars for as little as 7 days or as long as 365 days. It’s a great way for people to save money while being environmentally conscious by not purchasing an unnecessary car when they can just rent one.
As an intern, I am given a lot of responsibilities and trust within the company. During the past month, I have researched competitor data and input it into a excel spreadsheet that they plan to use on their company website. Since DriveMyCarRentals isn’t a traditional rental company such as Hertz or Avis, it is interesting for me to see the price comparisons between a smaller company and the big, traditional car rental companies. During my time as an intern, they also have plans for me to work with their social media platforms and create a social media calendar that they are able to use going forward. I believe this will be a great opportunity for me because I have some experience working with social media via my personal accounts and with my college hockey team.
The contributions that I am making during my time with DriveMyCarRentals are having a bigger impact on the company than I realized. My site supervisor always tells me how much he values my work and that if it were left to him, it would take weeks or months before these projects would be finished.
The experience that I am gaining in an internship abroad is priceless when it comes to my professional life. Not only am I gaining experience as a marketing and public relations intern, but I am gaining international experience as well. This is most important in preparation for my future career. It is becoming clear to me as a college student what employers value in a candidate, and I believe the skills I am gaining as an international intern will benefit me in my future endeavors. Many of the experiences I am gaining with DriveMyCarRentals will relate to future projects that I will work on and the future career that I have once I graduate.
CAPA International Education offers a great program for those that want to study and intern while they are abroad. My school has an international requirement, so I wanted to capitalize on my experience by taking classes and having an internship. I believe the international experiences that I am gaining through both my classes at the Australian Catholic University and my internship with DriveMyCarRentals will be some of the most beneficial during my time as a college student.
