In this week's post, Kelly shares why she misses London more each time she leaves the city and the obstacles she has faced during her travels abroad.

---

Every time I leave London, I always want to come back shortly after. Don’t get me wrong, I love traveling to new cities and experiencing all they have to offer. But I feel London calling me back every time.

I’ve travelled to Brugge, Amsterdam and Paris so far, and they’ve all been incredible. From Belgian waffles with Belgian chocolate ice cream and caramel sauce drizzled on top in Brugge to flavorful, aesthetically-pleasing macarons from the famous Ladurée in Paris, there was no shortage of delicious treats in the cities I’ve visited. Not only did these cities provide tons of new eats, but each possessed a rich history and unique architecture.

Living Like a Londoner: A Day at My Internship

Kelly is an official CAPA blogger for spring 2018, sharing her story in weekly posts on CAPA World. A Journalism major at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, she is studying abroad in London this semester.

In this week's post, Kelly gives us a look at what her day is like when she interns at MLML London and updates us on what she has done for the fashion label so far.

---

Somewhere in between going to work, having class, doing homework, participating in clubs, being part of a sorority, and maintaining a social life over the past few years, I trained myself into being a morning person. It was necessary for survival. So now I love mornings. Now that I’m in London, my daily life is actually quite similar to my life back home…when you break it down to the basics.

I typically wake up every day around 7 a.m. Honestly, I could probably sleep in a bit more each day. But being a morning person, I like to make time to actually sit down, eat breakfast and enjoy it. I also leave time most days to go for a morning walk. The days I go for walks are the ones I have my internship at MLML London—a fashion label specializing in women’s leg wear. Not only am I a morning person, but I hate being late and always get to places way earlier than I need to be. With my internship starting at 10 a.m., I typically get to the city of Westminster with 30-40 minutes to spare. And that’s where my morning walk comes in.

In this week's post, Kelly opens up about fulfilling her desire to intern in the global fashion industry and shares about her role at fashion label MLML London.

---

A chance to immerse myself in the fashion industry in one of the fashion capitals of the world—that’s something I couldn’t pass up while studying abroad in London. I’m almost two weeks into my internship at fashion label MLML London, and I’m loving it. The team at MLML consists solely of designer/creative director Carlotta Gherzi and head of sales Karina Gregori (and now myself for a few short months). MLML specializes in effortlessly chic and stylish leg wear with an importance on fit and the motivation to make a woman feel and look gorgeous. Leggings are Carlotta’s favorite item because they’re versatile from day to night, sexy yet casual, and comfortable yet unique. And that’s why it’s called MLML or My Love My Leggings. But she also offers skirts and the occasional top—all made of 100 percent real stretch leather from Italy.

and how to make a woman look and feel gorgeous.

As the social media marketing intern, it’s my job to bring ideas to existing social media strategies and implement them. My tasks involve taking and editing photos, crafting social media posts, writing blogs, attending trade and fashion shows, and market research. I’ll also be contacting magazine editors, bloggers and influencers to get MLML London’s new collection and the remaining products in stock known by more people and sold.

Observing London with All of My Senses

In this week's post, Kelly shares how she uses all five of her senses to observe and associate with London.

---

After living in London for a couple of weeks now, I’ve made some observations about the city. Whether I’m on my daily commute to CAPA or to my internship site, I’ve encountered recurring sights and developed associations with certain smells. I’ve noticed the sounds of the city, or lack thereof below it. I’ve allowed my taste buds to indulge in the endless food options at Camden Market. I’ve even noticed textural differences in London life compared to other cities.

CAPAStudyAbroad_London_Spring2018_From Kelly Allen - Parking.jpg

I first noticed how cars work in the city. Apart from the obvious fact that they drive on the left side of the road, cars parallel park extremely close together here. I’m sure that happens in other cities around the world, but what’s intriguing about the way cars park here is that they park in any direction they want. That means that cars are parked, and they’re not all facing in the same direction. Some cars are parked facing the front of another car. It’s fascinating, really. Parallel parking remains stressful enough. If you’re coming from the opposite side of the road and are trying to maneuver your way in, you’d probably have to possess a decent amount of skill and a calm head in the face of anxiety-inducing situations.

Arriving with a Sense of Curiosity

In this week's post, Kelly talks about cultivating a sense of curiosity and what she did upon arrival.

---

The plane to London's Heathrow Airport was just shy of eight hours from Chicago. Thirty minutes before landing, I fought every urge to take a photo in my millennial and photographer body. I wanted to sit there and enjoy the view. I want to make it my goal to not experience London entirely through a lens or screen. I saw a cluster of buildings on an island and a beam of light I assumed to be the London Bridge. Aside from the fact that I actually knew I was in London, I knew what that cluster of buildings was thanks to my new obsession with Netflix's original series The Crown. It's where I've brushed up on my British history before my arrival.

As we span in what seemed like endless 5 mph donuts, I thought about what I wanted to get out of this trip. I came to the conclusion that I want to get better at asking questions. I am a journalist, after all. It's our job to be curious. That's the easy part for me. But it's actually asking them that's the tough part. I have all of these questions, but only ever really ask a few. and need to get better at actually asking them. This will be crucial in my internship with fashion label MLML London this semester, so I can learn as much as possible.

In her first post, Kelly expresses her admiration for London and shares her expectations for an exciting semester and internship abroad.

When selecting a study abroad program, I had no doubt London was where I wanted to be. Not only does London host a number of magazines, but it's one of the chicest cities in the world. London bursts with fashion. The history, art and architecture ignite my curiosity. I've never been to London, but I can tell I will constantly be learning while there. Whether I'm admiring the architecture or wandering through exhibits in a museum, I'll always absorb the stories London tells.

I'll find myself learning not only in the classroom or at my internship, but also while on the streets exploring all the city has to offer. I chose to study and intern in London because I know learning and having that internship experience will set me up for continued success throughout my career and personal goals. London possesses all of my areas interest–most importantly, fashion, magazines and design. In my life, and in the career I am working toward through current internships and academics, I ceaselessly partake in these areas of interest.
