Kelly is an official CAPA blogger for spring 2018, sharing her story in weekly posts on CAPA World. A Journalism major at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, she is studying abroad in London this semester.
In this week's post, Kelly gives us a look at what her day is like when she interns at MLML London and updates us on what she has done for the fashion label so far.
Somewhere in between going to work, having class, doing homework, participating in clubs, being part of a sorority, and maintaining a social life over the past few years, I trained myself into being a morning person. It was necessary for survival. So now I love mornings. Now that I’m in London, my daily life is actually quite similar to my life back home…when you break it down to the basics.

I typically wake up every day around 7 a.m. Honestly, I could probably sleep in a bit more each day. But being a morning person, I like to make time to actually sit down, eat breakfast and enjoy it. I also leave time most days to go for a morning walk. The days I go for walks are the ones I have my internship at MLML London—a fashion label specializing in women’s leg wear. Not only am I a morning person, but I hate being late and always get to places way earlier than I need to be. With my internship starting at 10 a.m., I typically get to the city of Westminster with 30-40 minutes to spare. And that’s where my morning walk comes in.

I get off the Tube at Maida Vale station, which for some reason is a struggle for me to remember the pronunciation of, and challenge myself to walk in a different direction in the area each time. I’ve taken a couple of different routes so far. Highlights include Abbey Road (yes, the famous Zebra crossing as they call it here) and Abbey Studios, gorgeous homes worth approximately 5 million pounds, and trees that I’ve never seen before but look as though they came straight out of an alternate universe.

No two days have been the same at work so far. In the beginning, I was tasked with designing a look book for MLML’s autumn/winter 2018-19 collection. It was intriguing to get a sneak peek at the new designs and to work some Photoshop magic I’ve never done before. Now that it’s all wrapped up, I’ve been diving into the main components of my internship involving social media, marketing strategies, writing blog posts, attending fashion/trade shows and contacting magazine editors, stylists, influencers and more to bring more recognition to the label.

Work is underway on the label’s Instagram that I plan to transform to reflect it’s target market—women who are smart, classy, want to look sexy while being comfortable, and can afford high-end, luxury products. Along with the designer and head of sales, I started up an Instagram giveaway to engage our followers and up one lucky winner’s style game. I’ve also had the opportunity to wear some of the label’s leggings out and about to get a feel for them, give them exposure, and take photos in for Instagram.
At the Lineapelle leather trade show in Soho.
A week ago, I attended a leather trade show in Soho called Lineapelle and am attending Pure London aka “the UK’s most unmissable destination for fashion, buying and inspiration” this weekend. I’m incredibly excited for Pure London because I’ll be able to listen to seminars, view never-before-seen collections, and watch live catwalk shows. And better yet, the keynote speaker at the event is Cosmopolitan UK’s Editor in Chief Farrah Storr. She’ll be speaking about her experience of life at the top of the UK’s best-selling glossy magazine—which happens to be one of my absolute favorite magazines (and is just the type of magazine I’d like to write and edit in the future).

Aside from fashion events, I’ve been working on drawing up a list of bloggers and influencers with stats on their following, likes, work with brands, and so on to potentially contact and work with them. I’ve also been creating a list of blog post ideas to use on MLML London’s own blog.

My work with MLML London encompasses all of the things I love—fashion, writing and photography—and I couldn’t have asked for a better match.
Kelly's journey continues every Wednesday so stay tuned.
