Meet Carly Lewis, an official CAPA vlogger in London, England for Fall 2019:
University: Hollins University
Major: Creative Writing and Film
Study Abroad Location: London, England
Internship or volunteer placement: TBC
What are you most excited for during your study abroad semester?
I think what I am anticipating the most is being able to immerse myself and really live in a different cultural and artistically rich environment. Being a photographer and writer, I constantly look to my surroundings and the people within them for inspiration, and traveling to a new place is exactly the trick for that! Whether it be during the concerts I hope to attend in London or the many local shops I want to explore, the experiences I have will definitely grant me with some amazing stories.
What are three of your hobbies and interests?
My big three are film, food, and music (bonus is writing and photography). I love going out to the cinema, even if it’s by myself at 10pm, and completely escaping the world around me. My current favorite film is Rocketman; it was just so well done! Aside from that I enjoy going out and trying new local restaurants, especially the little bakeries around my city. And above all, listening to music, new and old, is one of my absolute favorite pastimes. Some of my most-loved artists (and inspirations) are Queen, Elton John, Florence + The Machine, and The Struts, just to name a few.
What’s one personal goal you hope to achieve while abroad?
I’m currently writing and researching for a fiction novel set amidst the London music scene which includes some history in that field. I really hope to gain some experiences in local concert venues and just explore some of the iconic sites from rock history to get inspiration as well as to write my story as true to the place as possible.
What’s one professional goal you hope to achieve while abroad?
With the internship I am pursuing while abroad, I really want to gain more working experience in my field of choice, especially since this is with an organization abroad. Being able to work with fellow artists who share a similar drive to create and to meet people from different places and walks of life will be a great way to help build my confidence in the workplace as well as further my communication skills.
What can we look forward to seeing in your videos?
I’m going to be taking my viewers along the London streets with me to many gems only locals would know about, plus some iconic spots. From concerts, to little bakeries, to some memorable places from pop culture history, it will be crazy and fun...and something to spark that wanderlust!
Anything else you’d like to say to people reading for the first time?
I am 100% a ball of nerdiness and excitement, so a vlog with me at the reins is guaranteed to never be boring! I hope to spread that same excitement and love for travel to my viewers.
