Jackson SchiefelbeinMeet Jackson Schiefelbein (he/him/his), an official CAPA Instagram TV vlogger in Barcelona, Spain for Spring 2020:

University: Arizona State University
Major: Sustainability & Global Studies
Study Abroad Location: Barcelona, Spain
Internship or volunteer placement:  N/A

What are you most excited for during your study abroad semester?
I am looking forward to experiencing the unique cultural blend of Barcelona and the political climate of the region. The mix of international residents with Spanish and Catalan natives creates an interesting city rich in history not many other places can stake claim to.

What are three of your hobbies and interests?
I am an avid runner, although I can rarely find the time to run as much as I would like. Along with this, I am committed to promoting culturally-respectful and sustainable international community development through my work with Fair Trade USA. I am also a passionate supporter of grassroots youth progressive activism to advocate for a more just future for young people around the world.

What’s one personal goal you hope to achieve while abroad?
I would like to meet and make friends with some of the local young people. I think one of the best ways to feel like a local and get to know a place is by socializing with people who live there, and doing this will provide me an authentic experience of Barcelona and what it really means to live there.

What’s one professional goal you hope to achieve while abroad?
After living and interning in the city for approximately four months, my goal is to leave nearly fluent in Spanish. Building upon the foundation I have established through my classes and previous travels, I am hopeful I can do this and become more competitive for an international career.

What can we look forward to seeing in your videos?
There are lots of things to look forward to learning about in my posts! You can expect to gain insight into the local food culture in Barcelona, the artistic history of the city, and an insider look into what I will be doing for my internship, among other things.

Anything else you’d like to say to people reading about you for the first time?
If you are considering studying abroad but aren’t sure how you can manage it, don’t let that stop you! From my experience, your school and program and everyone you meet along the way will want to help make it a reality and let you know that there are resources available to get you there.
