The Ultimate Day Trip From Dublin for A Student on a Budget

In this post, Molly talks about her favorite bus trip that she took while studying abroad in Dublin!

Towards the end of the semester, with my budget growing thin, I realized that I had a weekend free with no plans! My friend and I began looking at short day trips that were relatively easy to get to on a bus or the trains. In our search, we came across one of the bus tour companies that operate around Ireland. They have tours that go to most of the major sites on the island and their tours range from half-day trips to trips that last a few days!

There are a few reliable companies on the island, most of which are super affordable! We chose to take a tour around County Kerry that boasted a beautiful drive and stops at some of the top attractions in the area.

The first stop on the tour was at Torc Waterfalls. They let us off the bus and after a short walk through the woods, we were right at the base of the waterfall. Even at the end of November, the trees and greenery around the falls were so vibrant. It was so fun to take pictures and walk around the trails around the falls!

Our next stop was at the Muckross House and gardens. This is a historic mansion in the Killarney national park that was home to many notable families- including the Guinness family! There are tons of gardens on the grounds, a small lake, and gorgeous views of the mountains. Bonus- there is a cute little gift shop and café in the house where you can find souvenirs and grab a bite to eat.

The last stop, which just so happens to be my favorite, is Inch Beach. When we arrived at Inch Beach, it was almost sunset and there was a big storm coming in which made for some AMAZING pictures. This beach stretches for three miles, and is well-known for its surf! We had almost the entire beach to ourselves and the gorgeous view of the stormy sunset combined with the sound of the waves crashing in, made the perfect setting for the end of our day.

If you are looking for a convenient way to get around to some of the most beautiful sites on the island, I recommend you look into a day bus tour. They take the stress out of getting to the hard-to-reach areas and you’ll probably even learn something from your tour guide!

Here are some of my tips for taking a bus trip!

  • Make sure that you arrive at the pickup area a little bit earlier so you can be sure that you are in the right spot!
  • Pack lunch and snacks- the tours don’t always stop for meals.
  • Bring your headphones for the drive, but take them out to listen to your driver! They are super funny and will tell you fun facts or information about the different locations.
  • Read the reviews for both the tour company and the specific tour you want to take. They can tell you more about what to look for at each location and other good tips!

Thanks, Molly!
