Nov 30, 2018 9:38:00 AM / by Lorenzo Corazzin

In this week's post, Lorenzo asks fellow student Martyn about interning abroad in Sydney, developing professional skills internationally, and how this experience can serve as a gateway to reach your career goals. Martyn also shares advice on how to keep an open mind and get the most out of your international hands-on experience.

Meet Martyn, a senior student majoring in finance and marketing at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He is originally from New Jersey and wants to pursue a career in the entertainment/movie industry in Los Angeles. He also blogs for CAPA from Sydney. Today's Q&A is centered on the topic of interning abroad and gaining international experience.

Lorenzo Corazzin: How did you decide to come to Sydney?
Martyn Megaloudis: A lot of the required credits left for my major were international, so I thought it would make sense to take them abroad. This was my first real opportunity to travel outside the country, and through CAPA it was easier because they set up housing and activities.

Nov 27, 2018 11:00:00 AM / by Kaitlin O'Brien

In this post, Kaitlin shares her experience interning abroad for an entertainment company in Sydney and some key takeaways from her internship.

When I think about my time studying abroad in Sydney, Australia, my mind immediately wanders to one thing: my unbelievable internship. Of course, I had an incredible time wandering through the beautiful global city, the Sydney Harbor, the beaches, the mountains, and the various popular destinations, but my internship truly changed my experience abroad. In Sydney, I was an Entertainment and Sport Marketing intern for Ticketek, the largest ticketing and live entertainment provider in Australia and New Zealand. To give you a little background, my dream is to work in the entertainment industry later in life, and this internship was my first opportunity to get my foot in the door! So basically, it was an extremely big deal for me, and I could not have been more excited when I received my placement with Ticketek!

In this post, Jacee shares some insight into her rewarding internship at Sport NSW in Sydney!

Over the course of six weeks I was an intern for a company called Sport New South Wales (NSW). At first, I was nervous because I do not have much of a sports background and never paid much attention to them growing up. However, this experience quickly became one of the most humbling and inspiring endeavors I’ve ever gone on and I look back in awe at the wonderful time I had with this organization.

A Marketing Internship at Ordermentum in Sydney

Sep 29, 2018 11:30:00 AM / by Sydney Alderman

Sydney Alderman

Sydney Alderman is an official CAPA blogger, sharing her story on CAPA World. A Marketing and Global Management major at the University of Pittsburgh, she is studying abroad in Sydney.

In today's post, Sydney talks about her marketing internship experience with software company Ordermentum, what her responsibilities were, and how she adjusted to the Australian work environment.

---

While studying abroad in Sydney, I decided to do an internship along with my classes. Ordermentum is the company I intern with. It is a Software as a Service (SaaS) order management system for wholesalers and distributors in the food and beverage industry (specifically coffee, bread and patisserie, and dairy). It's located right by Sydney Harbour, so I would get off the train at Circular Quay and pass the Sydney Opera House on my way to my internship site every day. On nice, sunny days I would walk a few minutes to the harbor for lunch and watch the boats come in as I ate, and then walk back to the office and see it all through the window as I interned.

During my time as an Ordermentum intern, I was in charge of the email marketing strategy and content creation. I really looked forward to coming up with the strategy; it was the area I enjoyed the most. I was also actually producing the newsletters, designs, and promotions that would be sent to their customers and potential clients.

A Marketing and Communications Internship at Unbridled in Sydney

Sep 23, 2018 12:30:00 PM / by Martyn Megaloudis

Martyn Megaloudis

Martyn Megaloudis is an official CAPA blogger for fall 2018, sharing his story in weekly posts on CAPA World. A Marketing major at the University of Pittsburgh, he is studying abroad in Sydney this semester.

In this week's post, Martyn tells us about his internship responsibilities at Unbridled with consultant Louise Taylor and what he hopes to achieve by the end of the semester.

---

For my CAPA internship, I am interning as a marketing and communications intern for Unbridled Pty LTD. Unbridled is the brainchild of Louise Taylor, who is a motivational speaker and sales consultant. It is a small company—the first time that I have ever been part of one—where the only other employee is Louise herself. I work from her home office in Illawong, which is about an hour away by public transport. While I am the only other person besides Louise, I do have the company of Louise’s golden retriever, who, while lacking in technical skills is definitely a team player and a joy to have around. Working in a smaller setup is something I am not used to, but I’m excited to see what I can learn from interning at a startup.

In terms of the actual internship duties, I will be helping to create a wide range of marketing materials—from editing together podcasts to customer relationship management. Basically, anything that falls under the broad scope of the marketing field will more than likely come into my hands during this internship. As someone who only really has internship experience on the technical side of marketing, this is an exciting way for me to gain knowledge of aspects of marketing that I have yet to encounter both in school and from my other internship experiences.

Commuting to My Internship on Public Transportation for the First Time

Sep 12, 2018 10:30:00 AM / by Martyn Megaloudis

Martyn Megaloudis is an official CAPA blogger for fall 2018, sharing his story in weekly posts on CAPA World. A Marketing major at the University of Pittsburgh, he is studying abroad in Sydney this semester.

In this week's post, Martyn shares his first-time experience using public transportation in Sydney and what his commute to his internship placement is like.

---

I want to officially start off this post by talking about Sydney’s transportation. I wanted to talk about something that at face value may seem “boring,” because something that I quickly realized this week is that studying abroad isn’t a total transitional state. I still have homework, I still have to take the train and the bus to my internship, and I still have to deal with monotony. Obviously, there’s quite a bit of shake-up living in an entirely new country but there’s also a strange sense of familiarity in my day-to-day life that I personally wasn’t expecting.

Opal Transportation Card

4The biggest difference that I’ve had to deal with so far is the way you’re charged. At Pitt, you pay once you hop on the bus and that’s all you have to worry about. In Sydney, you tap your Opal card (transportation card) once when you get on a bus/train/ferry, and then you have to tap once again when you get off—that’s how they calculate the fare. I’ve nearly jumped back into a bus at least twice because I forgot to tap off when I was leaving. It’s a bit easier with trains considering you can’t walk out of the station without doing it, but it’s still something to get used to.

An Internship Experience in the Australian Legal Sector with Holman Webb Lawyers

Aug 24, 2018 10:30:00 AM / by Marianne Zarzar

Marianne Zarzar is an official CAPA blogger for summer 2018, sharing her story in weekly posts on CAPA World. A Sociology of Law, Criminology, and Deviance major at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, she is studying abroad in Sydney this semester.

In this week's post, Marianne shares about her internship experience at Holman Webb Lawyers in Sydney and what she has learned about legal field in Australia.

---

When deciding to study abroad, the only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to complete an internship while abroad. I wanted to know what the workplace is like in other countries, all while gaining some experience in the legal field. During my time in Sydney, I interned at Holman Webb lawyers, which is a commercial and insurance law firm.

In all honestly, I was nervous when I first learned about my placement since I knew close to nothing about that sector of the legal field. Despite that, and after having my Skype interview with my supervisor at Holman Webb, I decided that it would be an amazing and challenging opportunity. Unsurprisingly, I found that everyone at the firm was very welcoming and willing to teach me everything I needed to know. I think that nervousness is totally normal among almost everyone who does internships, especially when doing so in a new country. However, I had to remind myself that our placements were not expecting us to be experts, and were expecting to have to teach us everything we needed to know.
